Dust emissions
top our concerns

No targets or plan
to curtail uranium

FARE has identified two very real issues concerning dust emissions in Port Hope, and we would like to work with Cameco and the Low Level Radioactive Waste Management Office to resolve both these issues to the complete satisfaction of the citizens of Port Hope.

ISSUE 1:
Cameco reports emissions of approximately 120 kg of uranium particulate dust every year. Those which spew out of smoke stacks are measured precisely, but the majority, which escape from the plant on a day-to-day basis, are called “fugitive” emissions and their volume is merely estimated.

Cameco says its emissions are below regulatory standards, but that is not precisely true. Some pollutants, like uranium, have no air quality standards yet. Others like ammonia and fluorides are up to four times above the standards recommended by Ontario. The province will begin enforcing these standards in less than three years, yet Cameco has set no targets to cut back.

As with the recently discovered uranium seepage, it is questionable whether Cameco is even sure about the amount of particulate dust coming from its lakefront facility. It is clearly an old plant that leaks. This airborne dust circulates through the town and surrounding area, wherever it is carried by the wind. It can be re-circulated if disturbed, eaten on backyard fruit and vegetables, and inhaled when we breathe. How do we put a stop to this intolerable dust problem?

ISSUE 2:
The low-level radioactive waste clean-up is already referred to as the Port Hope Dust-Up. While we are all in favour of ridding the town of decades of dangerous radioactive waste, we must be completely sure that in the process we don’t do more harm than good.

The plan is to excavate literally hundreds of different sites in Port Hope where uranium waste is known to be. If excavated wet, the uranium will run off with the water, so in all likelihood the digging will be done when the material is dry. When disturbed, some of the material will blow away as dust, and those uranium particulates will land, in due course, on our vegetables and in our lungs.

The LLRWMO is already late and over budget in Phase 1. Why has it not yet published any plan to safely manage the dust created by the clean-up?

This issue must concern every citizen of Port Hope. FARE, which is only interested in the long term health of us all, has good questions, but we are not getting straight answers. And if we’re not, neither are you.

If not for ourselves then for our children’s sake, ask yourself this simple question: Do you really know who you can trust?
