Scary map shows
how much Cameco
pollutes harbour CNSC says it must stop
before low-level clean-up
More than a year and a half after it discovered uranium and arsenic leaking from its UF6 plant, Cameco has provided a site map showing just how much is still in the soil.
The map makes it quite clear that contamination is leaking into the turning basin/yacht club since the harbour walls are not designed to contain the pollution.
The CNSC seems to be concerned. Chairman Michael Binder told Cameco executives in November that obviously no dredging of the harbour can take place as part of the low-level clean-up until his agency is satisfied that Cameco is not leaking new contamination into it.
Despite the evidence of its own map, Cameco continues to insist that its mitigation measures have successfully contained the problem. That is not true, but the CNSC has allowed the company to restart its leaking UF6 plant after digging up a mninimal amount of contaminated soil.
Those who hope the low-level clean-up will remove Port Hope's stigma should be concerned about this. The real problem isn't historic; it's Cameco continuing to pollute our waterfront.
If you're concerned about this, write Mayor Linda Thompson. Or think about electing a new mayor in November.
